Travel Guide: New York!

It’s New York Fashion Week! Sadly I missed it, but I was in New York this past weekend and had the best time, so it basically feels the same!

I have been to New York many times, but I have not done the “touristy” stuff before (besides Times Square and shopping, because that is a must for any New York trip).

This time was different! First, we went to the US Open, have y’all been before? This was such a spur of the moment, amazing decision! I grew up as a tennis player, I played from elementary school until high school (I also played a little for fun in college and tried to play after college, but that was a fail :)). When we landed in New York Thursday night, I looked at my husband and I said “How cool would it be if we went to the US Open tomorrow?” And before he even responded, I immediately started googling tickets.

The biggest dilemma –  who should we see? Sloane Stephens and Rafael Nadal were both playing at noon.. but Serena and Venus Williams were playing each other at seven pm. We debated and then we decided on Sloane Stephens and Rafael Nadal during the day and what.a.great.decision! They both played amazing and Nadal’s match lasted over four and a half hours and it was so worth it!

If you haven’t been to the US Open before, I highly recommend it! Even if you don’t want to buy tickets to a specific match, there is SO much to do for fans (including food and drinks). There are courts everywhere so you can even watch a game! Not to mention, there was a drink called the honey deuce by Grey Goose and it had three honeydew melons to represent tennis balls and it was delicious! The cup also makes a great souvenir and it has the names of all of the winners since the US Open started. Here is just some of the fun we had:

Second, we went to the New York Yankees game! I guess you could say that we like sports. It was a new stadium (I was told this) and it was huge. The weather was perfect and much cooler than Texas, I was actually cold! The game was great and all, but I had a Nathan’s hot dog and let me just tell you, it was amazing! Nathan’s is the sponsor of the Hot Dog Eating Contest on Fourth of July, so you know it’s good. Sadly I don’t have a picture because I wolfed it down, it was so delicious! Here are some pictures of my outfit though in front of the famous signs and I matched the players with my pin striped pants:

Third, we saw a show on Broadway and not just any show, the Lion King! We knew it was going to be good, but it was way better than expected! The costumes, the singing, the actors, the nostalgia, this is definitely a must see! It’s great for kids, adults and the whole family! I can’t wait to see another show on Broadway, I also can’t believe it’s taken me this long to see one! What shows have you guys seen?

Y’all didn’t think I would get through this post without telling you about the great restaurants we ate at, did you? If you know me, you know I love food and boy, does New York have some delicious food!

Emmy Squared PizzaIf you like Pizza, this is a must! We had Detroit style Pizza and it was amazing! It was deep dish, spicy and sweet! If you check them out online, be ready to drool!

ABC KitchenThis was the cutest restaurant and I loved the atmosphere! This is an American eatery by Jean-Georges. Get the crab toast and raw tuna for appetizers. For dinner, my husband had the salmon and I don’t normally like salmon (except for smoked or in sushi), but it was amazing! I had the Pork chop and it was really good. For dessert, we got the cookie plate and chocolate cake. We treated ourselves because #vacation. Definitely check this place out if you’re in NY!

The Saint Austere: (I am making myself hungry just recapping/thinking about the delicious food we ate). Get.the.creamy.polenta. I have never tried polenta before and now I am going to get it everywhere I can. All of the pasta dishes are highly recommended. I got the Cavatelli and loved it. It has pork, meatballs and delicious pasta. For dessert, we tried the tiramisu and warm apple crisp, both were great! Great atmosphere here too!

Jimmy’s Diner: There are a lot of great options on the menu, but try tater heaven. As you can tell from the name, you will be in heaven (and super full). Homemade tater tots topped with scrambled eggs, onions, cheese and guacamole. Yum!

What are your favorite things to do in New York? Have you tried any of these restaurants? I would love to hear from you guys!
