Corn dogs, cotton candy, funnel cake beer… it’s all here! Y’all, the State Fair of Texas is open, have you been yet? It’s open until October 21st, only 13 more days!
As UT football fans, we are very fortunate because the TX/ou game is played at the Cotton Bowl at the same time as the State Fair, so we get to do both – the fair and the game. It’s the best of both worlds. This year was actually my husband and I’s 6th time to go together and our first time as a married couple! Time flies when you’re… eating fried food.
We normally do “fair stuff” during the first half of the game. Our favorite annual tradition is to get a Fletcher’s corn dog and then take a picture with Big Tex. Did y’all know Big Tex’s hat is 95 gallons and he is 55 feet tall? Amazing! Also, the jalapeno and cheese corn dog is the bomb dot com.
Here are some fun foods to try this year:
- Fernie’s hoppin’ john cake with jackpot sauce (2018 best taste – savory)
- Sweet crispy rice (2018 best taste – sweet)
- Cotton candy taco (2018 most creative)
- Deep fried shepherd’s pie
- Fried Thanksgiving dinner
- Tamale donut
- Texas-shaped pizza (insert heart eyes)
Looking for something sweet?
- Fried milk and cookies
- Fried Oreos
- Deep fried nutter butters
- Deep fried Reeses and ice cream
- Fried cake balls
And you have to have some fun drinks to accompany the delicious food:
- Barrel-O-Rita (in a pineapple!)
- Funnel cake beer (delicious with little pieces of sugar on the rim of your drink)
- Lemon basil champagne shandy
- Frosty’s frozen hot chocolate
- Corndog ale
Wine not? Did you know there is a wine garden? They have frozen wine margaritas and wine pops! Not to mention wine samplings and wine available by the glass or bottle. Now I wish this was year-round.
There are so many different rides (over 70!) and games, but here are a few of our favorites:
- The Ferris wheel is always a must!
- Texas Skyway is fun and provides a great view of Fair Park.
My husband was so cute and wanted to win me a prize. He played the “spill the milk” softball game and the football throw. Sadly, he did not win, but it’s the thought (and the fun we had) that counts!
There is live music, car shows, a lot of great shopping, a petting zoo and they have different events every day! The state fair is great for the whole family, a day out with your coworkers or a date night.
What is your favorite thing to do at the fair? Do you have any annual traditions? Don’t forget, only 13 more days to go! You won’t want to miss it this year. Bonus! If you sign up to become a Big Tex Insider online, you will receive $10 off a family 4-pack. This includes general admission tickets plus food and ride coupons.
Now for the best part…outfit details!

Here are some of my favorites (all burnt orange, of course) and they are all under $50:
Nikola faux wrap romper: I love pairing this romper with over the knee boots or booties.
Ariella button front dress: this is the cutest dress, love the buttons down the side and the tie on the side.
Ameli double split duster cardigan: This is the cutest cardigan, I love the split on the sides and it is the perfect length for fall. Pair this with booties and jeans!
Versailles button front skirt: I love the buttons and details on this skirt.
Sammie faux suede skirt: I love how this skirt flares out and looks cute with a tucked in shirt.
Happy State Fair and shopping!
